Lamine Yamal breaks silence on Bernabeu racist abuse: “A thousand times” | OneFootball

Spanish football has had a problem with racism for a number of years, and several Barcelona players have been affected. Lamine Yamal is one of them, and he has now opened up on what these experiences have been like for him.

Speaking on Universo Valdano (via MD), the 19-year-old was asked about whether he has ever been racially abused.

Lamine Yamal, who’s in the running for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award, went on to reference the most notable case when he was subjected to racist abuse, which was during Barcelona’s 4-0 victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in October 2024 – a match in which he scored the third goal for Hansi Flick’s side.

“For example, the typical Bernabeu video in which they said everything to me and Raphinha and people were surprised by my reaction. In the end, the fact that that person calls me black is not going to bother me at all. I am black, I am not of any colour, it is another thing whether it is right or wrong because they say it to me in a derogatory way. It’s wrong, but what I’m not going to do, who am playing a game, where people have paid the ticket to see me, is to get angry for a person who has disrespected me.”

Spanish football authorities have tried desperately to bring these cases to an end, and while there have been less reported cases over the last 12 months, there is still work to be done in that regard.
