According to SPORT, Lamine Yamal has broken another remarkable FC Barcelona record after wearing the captain’s armband before turning 20, becoming the youngest player to captain the club in a competitive match in the modern era.

During the club’s Champions League meeting with Feyenoord, Lamine took over as captain after Raphinha was substituted, becoming the youngest player on record to wear the armband for the club on the pitch.

His achievement came at just 19 years and 58 days old, comfortably beating the previous modern-era benchmarks set by Bojan Krkic and Gavi.

Younger than Bojan and Gavi

The first captain in Barcelona’s history was club founder Joan Gamper, who first wore the armband at the age of 21.

The two most recent young precedents were Bojan and Gavi, who both captained Barça in competitive matches at the age of 20.

Bojan first did so at 20 years and 61 days, while Gavi was 15 days older when he wore the armband for the first time.

Gavi’s first occasion also came as a gesture from the squad following his return from a serious injury.

Lamine has now surpassed both of them by almost a full year.

A responsibility Lamine embraces

Even before the Feyenoord match, Lamine spoke about what it meant to be selected by his teammates as one of Barcelona’s captains.

The teenager explained that the honour made him feel a greater sense of responsibility while also filling him with pride.

That maturity has become increasingly striking given how quickly his career has developed.

With a European Championship and a World Cup in his cabinet with Spain, as well as three La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey with Barcelona, wearing the armband represents another step in an extraordinary rise rather than an entirely new source of pressure.

Another milestone in Lamine’s rapid rise

Just a year ago, Lamine took the No. 10 shirt and the inevitable comparisons with Lionel Messi intensified. The teenage superstar has kept developing and has now added another historic achievement to his rapidly growing list.

There is no known record of a Barcelona captain being younger than Lamine, although it cannot be completely ruled out that a teenager occasionally wore the armband during the club’s first two decades.

Lamine had already experienced captaincy in the academy, where the armband is rotated among players.

This time, however, the stage was the first team and the Champions League, making the latest milestone all the more significant.
