Spain have booked their place in the World Cup Round of 16, but Barcelona star Lamine Yamal believes there is still plenty of room for improvement as the team prepares for a huge Spain vs Portugal World Cup encounter.

Following Spain’s convincing 3-0 victory over Austria, Lamine Yamal was named MVP and used the opportunity to send a message about Spain’s World Cup ambitions.

The youngster also confirmed that he is fully fit and ready to contribute in whatever role is required.

The 18-year-old admitted that Spain still have aspects of their game to improve despite producing several strong performances at the World Cup.

“We have to keep improving, both in our play and our intensity, but we know the quality we have and we’re not afraid of any team—we’re Spain. 

“We have to prove it on the field, but we believe in ourselves,” he began, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Yamal eager to face Cristiano Ronaldo

Spain will now face Portugal after Cristiano Ronaldo’s side overcame Croatia to secure their place in the last 16.

That outcome means Lamine Yamal vs Cristiano Ronaldo will become one of the headline storylines heading into the Round of 16 clash.

Speaking about the prospect of facing the Portuguese icon, Yamal reacted with admiration but insisted that progressing to the next round remains his main objective.

“It would be an honour to play against Cristiano, obviously, but I’m focused on winning the game, and I don’t care which one of us advances.”

The Barcelona player once again spoke about his ambition of lifting the trophy, reaffirming his World Cup dream.

At the same time, he also acknowledged the support he has received from supporters during the tournament.

Expressing his gratitude, the Spain international said he is thankful “for the love I receive in every stadium, which helps me come out even more motivated,” he stated.
