Barcelona president Joan Laporta has addressed Frenkie de Jong’s remarks about the upcoming La Liga fixture in Miami, making it clear that while he respects the captain’s opinion, the club will follow the league’s directive and play where required.
After months of speculation and negotiation, La Liga officially confirmed that Barcelona will face Villarreal in Miami on December 20.
This historic encounter will mark the first time a La Liga match is played on American soil, a move that has drawn mixed reactions from fans, clubs, and player unions across Spain.
Despite widespread criticism, La Liga president Javier Tebas has remained confident in his commitment to expanding the league’s global footprint, particularly in the North American market.
Barcelona midfielder and captain Frenkie de Jong recently voiced his disapproval of the decision, expressing his concern about the competitive integrity of such a move.
“I don’t like that we are going to play there, and I don’t agree with it. It’s not fair for the competition,” said De Jong.

In response, Laporta maintained a diplomatic stance but made it evident that the club is aligned with La Liga’s directive.
“UEFA and La Liga have approved it, and we will do what is required of us. If they say Miami, we will go to Miami.
“I respect Frenkie de Jong’s opinion as a captain, but the club is committed to what La Liga decides.
“We supported this idea because the American market is very promising for us, as we have partners and sponsors, and we are in the process of moving our headquarters from New York to Miami,” responded the Barcelona president, as reported by COPE.
The expansion into the American market presents a lucrative opportunity for Barcelona to grow commercially, strengthen relationships with sponsors, and expand their fan base internationally.
While players like De Jong may prioritise the sporting aspect, Laporta’s stance reflects a broader vision aimed at securing Barcelona’s financial and global future.
