Manchester City forward Erling Haaland became a major talking point during a tense political debate connected to the club’s presidential race.
During a recent debate broadcast on the Catalan platform 3Cat, presidential candidate Victor Font raised the subject of the Manchester City striker while discussing Barcelona’s long-term sporting strategy.
Haaland has been linked with Barcelona for several years and remains a dream target for many supporters. However, his current situation makes any immediate move extremely complicated.
The Norwegian forward recently signed a long-term extension with Manchester City that ties him to the Premier League side until 2034.
Despite that, Font suggested that efforts are being made to position Barcelona favourably should the player eventually decide to leave England.
Explaining the situation during the debate, Font revealed that discussions with people close to the striker had already taken place.
“We are negotiating an option to buy Erling Haaland for when he wants to leave Manchester City.”
Font had already hinted earlier that such a transfer would not happen in the immediate future.
He admitted that signing Haaland in the short term is unrealistic but insisted the club must think ahead.
However, the comments quickly triggered a strong response from current Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
Laporta rejected the idea that such negotiations were taking place and accused Font of making statements that had already been denied by the striker’s representatives.
Responding directly during the debate, Laporta said, “The player’s agent has already denied Mr. Font’s statement.
“This lie that Mr. Font has constructed has already been disproved,” he emphasised.
The Barcelona president did not stop there and continued his criticism of Font’s claims.
“It has backfired on you. You have no sense of the ridiculous. What you say has already been disproved,” he stated.
