Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, spoke about Lionel Messi during the Foros de Vanguardia event.

The Barça president avoided speculating about a possible return of the Argentine star to the club and repeated his intention to give him the greatest tribute in the club’s history.

Kicking things off, Laporta downplayed reports of the fractured relationship between himself and the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner over the latter’s exit in 2021.

“People can understand each other by talking. I don’t see any problem,” he said.

Outlining the plans for a tribute to Messi, Laporta added: “We’ve thought about giving him the most beautiful tribute ever given, and a statue alongside players who have made history.”

“Kubala, Cruyff, Messi, and Ronaldinho also come to mind. Leo has defined an era and is the best player in history and in Barça’s history,” he commented.

Regarding the possibility that the Argentine star could have a ‘last dance’ as a player in the new Spotify Camp Nou, the president avoided speculation.

“I’m not going to fuel controversies or speculation about things that aren’t realistic. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Leo will always be in the collective memory of Barcelona fans. Leo has a contract with a football club,” Laporta noted.

As for the tribute plans, the Barcelona president hoped that it takes place once the Spotify Camp Nou is fully reopen, allowing more than 100,000 fans to pay homage to the legend.

“The tribute should take place at a time when we can thank him for everything he’s done for Barça. A tribute with a full Camp Nou, with 105,000 Barça fans thanking Messi for everything he’s done for the club, could be a beautiful thing,” he said.
