Wolves are mourning former winger Terry Wharton, who has died at 83 after a short illness. His funeral is tomorrow at Bushbury Crematorium. He scored his final Wolves goal in 1967 against Newcastle, whom the current side face on Sunday.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, staff and supporters observed a minute’s silence before the West Ham match this month. Tributes from former team-mates and club greats praised his humour, generosity and magnetic presence.

Wharton made 242 appearances and scored 79 goals across six seasons. The right winger partnered Alan Hinton, then Dave Wagstaffe, and scored on debut in a 2-0 win over Ipswich.

He was renowned from the spot and struck a Black Country derby hat-trick in a 7-0 win over Albion on 16 March 1963. His Wolves years brought relegation, then a swift promotion back.

After Molineux he played for Bolton and Crystal Palace, then Durban City, Walsall and Kidderminster, before non-league spells. He later worked at Lucas Aerospace and as a taxi driver.

In later life he was a fixture of the Former Players’ Association, celebrated for storytelling and for lifting friends, including Phil Parkes, during tough times. Journalist Tim Nash is completing his autobiography, Terry’s All Gold, at Sue’s request for publication this year.

The service is at 12.30pm on Friday in the East Chapel at Bushbury Crematorium, followed by a wake at Fordhouses Cricket Club. He is survived by his wife Sue, children Darren and Joanne, and grandchildren.
