FC Bayern secured a late away victory in the Bundesliga, winning 3-2 at SC Freiburg. The Munich side trailed for a long time but turned the game around in a furious final phase.
Vincent Kompany made five changes to his starting XI from the 4-0 win over Union Berlin, with Manuel Neuer returning in goal after his injury lay-off and Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof starting in defence. Raphaël Guerreiro and Luis Díaz started in attack, while Serge Gnabry replaced the injured Harry Kane in the heart of the attack.
The game was intense from the outset, with Freiburg disrupting the game early on and putting Bayern under pressure with aggressive pressing. The home side had the first big chance when Philipp Treu narrowly missed from close range after a cross (14′). Sport-Club remained dangerous after that, while Munich struggled to build up play.
The record champions only had better opportunities towards the end of the first half, with Tom Bischof missing the best chance when he shot over the goal after a confusing situation in the penalty area (43′). Overall, however, it remained a goalless draw at the break.
The hosts got off to the perfect start after the break, with Johan Manzambi taking the lead with a long-range shot just seconds after the restart (46′). Bayern looked disorganized at this stage and initially struggled to get back into the game.
Freiburg remained dangerous after that and added to their tally. After a corner, the ball ended up with Lucas Höler, who scored from close range to make it 2-0 (71′). Munich responded with several changes and subsequently increased the pressure considerably.
Bayern’s efforts were rewarded in the final phase, with Tom Bischof scoring the equalizer with a low shot from distance in the 81st minute. Munich continued to press and pinned Freiburg deep in their own half.
Bayern threw everything forward again in the final minutes – and actually turned the game around completely. First, Tom Bischof scored again in stoppage time after a short corner to make it 2:2 (90.+2). Shortly afterwards, the record champions scored the final goal: In the 99th minute, Lennart Karl scored the celebrated goal for a 3:2 away win.
The late success extends FC Bayern’s lead at the top of the table to twelve points for the time being, while Freiburg remain on 36 points and miss out on an important step in the battle for the international places.
FC Bayern will continue their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Real Madrid on Tuesday. In the Bundesliga, an away game at FC St. Pauli awaits next weekend, while SC Freiburg host Celta Vigo in the Europa League on Thursday before facing their next opponents in the league.
