Vincent Kompany fired up the rotation machine on Saturday afternoon. The Belgian opted for Minjae Kim alongside Jonathan Tah in the back four as Dayot Upamecano was given a break. Tom Bischof also started at left-back, with Laimer covering the right flank. Raphael Guerreiro surprisingly started up front behind Harry Kane, while Michael Olise was also given a rest

However, Munich got off to anything but a good start. Andreas Hountindji shocked the German record champions as early as the 6th minute after Laimer lost possession. The striker converted a pinpoint pass from Mathias Pereira Lage. Hountindji was free through and shot towards the corner of the goal – the lead for St. Pauli

After 23 minutes, Lennart Karl struck the inside of the post with a long-range shot from a half-right position, and just six minutes later Harry Kane shot from the left corner of the penalty area after Luis Diaz’s assist, but missed

Bayern with a flurry of chances – Guerreiro equalizes

In the 35th minute, Bischof then took heart from around 20 metres out, his deflected shot clattering against the visitors‘ post. The equalizer was already on the cards at this stage of the game, and it came

In the 44th minute, Kim played a spectacular high ball behind the St. Pauli defense, where Diaz ran in, processed the ball and then stumbled slightly – but the Colombian brought the ball down to Guerreiro, who shot with his full back to make it 1-1

And so they went into half-time with the score at 1-1. Vincent Kompany’s team put in an average performance compared to previous weeks, which is why Michael Olise came on for Laimer in the second half, moving Guerreiro to the right-back position

Bayern continued to have more of the play in the second half and clearly upped the tempo, but St. Pauli defended passionately and rarely gave the German champions any space to combine

In the 64th minute, Bayern pressed the visitors deep into their own half and combined down the right flank, where Olise crossed to the second post, but Bischof narrowly missed on the volley. Josip Stanisic and Serge Gnabry then came on for Guerreiro and Karl. In the 81st minute, Kane struck a shot against the inside left post following a corner

Diaz and Jackson for Bayern victory

Leon Goretzka came on for Kim in the 77th minute, Nicolas Jackson came on for Pavlovic and in the 93rd minute, Diaz put FC Bayern ahead with a header from a Kimmich cross. Jackson then took advantage of the high Pauli defence to make it 3-1

Bayern remain eight points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the table. FC Bayern will continue their DFB Cup campaign next Wednesday evening when they face Union Berlin in the round of 16. Kick-off in the capital is at 20:45.
