Ipswich Town marked their return to the Premier League with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road, with former Black Cats winger Jack Clarke scoring a late winner against his old club.
Sunderland started brightly and nearly took the lead inside the opening five minutes, but Leif Davis produced an important block to deny Brian Brobbey.
The Blues gradually grew into the contest and broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Julio Enciso intercepted a loose pass before driving towards the box and picking out Emersonn, who made no mistake from close range on his debut.
Sunderland responded before the interval, with Nilson Angulo producing a stunning free-kick from around 25 yards that clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way in.
Both sides had chances to win it after the restart, but the game appeared destined to finish level until Clarke delivered in the 90th minute.
The substitute collected a pass from Sasa Lukic inside the area before calmly curling his effort into the far corner to secure a memorable three points for Ipswich.
