It was a hard-fought victory for Flamengo as they had to labour for all three points. Rubro-Negro claimed a narrow 3-2 win over LDU when both sides met in Quito on Tuesday night. The game was valid for the third group stage fixture of the Libertadores.
Flamengo started the game in good fashion and raced to a 2-0 lead following goals from Gabigol and Bruno Henrique.
However, a poor second half allowed the Ecuadorians to level matters, with strikes from Borja and Amarilla.
Just when the game looked set for a stalemate, Arrascaeta was brought down in the box and Gabigol scored the resulting spot kick to bag his second goal of the night and the winning goal for Flamengo.
With another brace once again, Gabigol moves up to 16 goals in the Libertadores and has now drawn level with Zico as the highest goal-scorer for Fla in the competition. Another penalty scored as well means Gabigol has now scored 19 out of his 20 total penalties taken for the club, missing only one of them. That amounts to a 95 per cent success rate from the spot.
Following that victory, Flamengo are up to nine points and continue their reign at the top of Group G, also with a 100% record so far. LDU are in second place with four points.
Flamengo’s next outing will come on Saturday when they take on Volta Redonda for the second leg of the Carioca semifinal. Their next Libertadores game will be on Tuesday when they take on Unión La Calera for the fourth fixture of the group stage.
