Late Haaland penalty hands City dramatic Anfield win
Manchester City beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday 8 February with Erling Haaland scoring a late penalty.
Manchester City left Anfield with huge Premier League win after dramatic finish that included late penalty and long VAR check.
City had the better control in first half and created chances but the game stayed tight until the final 20 minute.
Liverpool then struck first in the 74th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai scored stunning free-kick to put the home side 1-0 up.
City hit back quickly. In the 84th minute, Bernardo Silva equalised after the ball dropped in the box and he finished past Alisson to make it 1-1.
The turning point came in stoppage time. City were awarded penalty when Matheus Nunes went down after challenge from Alisson inside the area.
Erling Haaland converted from the spot in the 90+3 minute to complete the comeback and seal 2-1 victory.
Liverpool had moments where they felt decisions went against them. They appealed for penalty in first half and later argued for stronger punishment after foul on Mohamed Salah just outside the box.
In the final seconds, Liverpool threw everyone forward and City broke away into open goal situation.
The ball ended up in the net but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for foul in the build-up. Szoboszlai was shown a red card for the incident.
City’s numbers showed how much threat they carried even before the late winner:
