Manchester United have announced their squad for today’s high-stakes clash against Tottenham Hotspur and there are some surprising absences.
Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro are notably missing from the squad.
According to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, Eriksen and Yoro missed today’s clash due to illness.
It was a major surprise to see the duo missing from the team sheet as the Red Devils were already without several key players due to injury.
Lisandro Martinez, a cornerstone of the defence, suffered a devastating cruciate ligament injury, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Amad Diallo also suffered an ankle injury in training this week.
United have confirmed that he will be out for a number of weeks but reports believe that Diallo is also set to miss the rest of the campaign.
Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer also missed the Spurs’ encounter due to injuries.
Manager Ruben Amorim was forced to name a staggering seven academy players on the bench, including Chido Obi, Harry Amass, Sekou Kone, Jack Fletcher, Jack Moorhouse, Elyh Harrison, and Tyler Fredricson.
New signing Ayden Heaven and Victor Lindelof were the other two substitutes.
United’s bench has an average age of 19.3 years.
Amorim will be hoping that both Yoro and Eriksen make a swift recovery.
The 19-year-old defender is a world-class talent and is considered one of the best young defenders of the future.
With Martinez injured, Yoro has a huge role to play going forward for the Red Devils.
He has previously played as left-sided centre-back which is primarily occupied by Martinez.
