With his proposed move unresolved, Lautaro Díaz featured in Santos' training match on Thursday, coming on in the second half of a goalless draw with Osasco Sporting at CT Rei Pelé. He has been training as usual in recent days.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the forward is on loan at Santos from Cruzeiro and had been cleared to join Racing on loan. Cruzeiro, who hold his rights, were open to a deal including a buy option set at three million dollars, though talks remain stalled.

Head coach Cuca initially resisted the move, then accepted Lautaro’s release. With no agreement reached, he used the striker in the run-out.

Racing are coached by Juan Pablo Vojvoda, who left Santos in March after previously working with Lautaro, a link that has eased discussions. If the loan progresses, Santos are not expected to receive a showcase fee, though the club could receive something if Racing make the transfer permanent at the end of the spell.

Lautaro lost his place before the calendar pause. This year he has one goal in 19 appearances, comprising seven in the Paulista, eight rounds in the Brasileiro where he scored against Flamengo, and four in the Sudamericana.

He joined on loan from Cruzeiro in September last year, a deal running to July with an option to buy and the possibility of extending to the end of the year. Last season he recorded two assists and three goals in 15 Brasileirão matches and should leave Santos on four goals and two assists from 34 games.

Born in Buenos Aires, the 28-year-old began at Estudiantes de Caseros and Villa Dálmine before moving to Independiente del Valle, where he won the 2022 Copa Sudamericana, the 2023 Recopa Sudamericana and the 2023 Supercopa Ecuador.
