Lazio and Torino ‘in talks’ over Mandas & Israel goalkeeper swap

Lazio and Torino are reportedly in talks over a swap involving goalkeepers Christos Mandas and Franco Israel.

According to The Laziali, Mandas has not featured in Serie A this season, with Ivan Provedel starting all 18 league matches. The Greek played only in last month’s Coppa Italia win at AC Milan, and a sale is viewed as a route to minutes for the 24-year-old and a capital gain for Lazio.

Recent links to Juventus and Genoa did not progress. He could reunite with Marco Baroni, who made him a regular starter in the second half of last season, with Israel moving to Formello.

The former Lazio head coach now leads Torino, whose squad could use a new goalkeeper. The Granata signed Israel from Sporting Club last summer, but early promise tailed off and he recently lost his place to 33-year-old journeyman Alberto Paleari.

If the double deal is completed, Baroni would likely hand Mandas the gloves straight away. Israel would not significantly threaten Provedel’s berth at the Stadio Olimpico, instead acting as understudy to the 31-year-old, who has registered nine clean sheets this season.

The clubs are working on the proposal, and there was also talk last week of a separate swap involving Ivan Ilic and Reda Belahyane.
