Lazio have reportedly entered the fray for Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who is hoping to leave Old Trafford in January.
The Biancocelesti are aiming to lift the transfer ban in the coming weeks so they can resume their activities on the market starting the January window. Upon his arrival last summer, Maurizio Sarri requested the signing of a dynamic box-to-box midfielder capable of adding goals to the side. The club’s abysmal stats in terms of creating chances prove the manager right.
Therefore, Lazio will certainly address their midfield issues in January, but it remains to be seen if they’ll be able to lure in the right profile in the middle of the campaign. The club has recently been linked with several profiles, but Torino’s Ivan Ilic could be the most plausible option. Nevertheless, an English source has now revealed an alternative track.
During his appearance on the United Stand, British journalist Ben Jacobs reported that the Italian capital side has enquired about Mainoo. The 20-year-old is a Man Utd youth product who made his big breakthrough in 2023/24, but has been reduced to a benchwarmer at Ruben Amorim’s court.
While the Red Devils are hoping to keep him at Carrington, the young midfielder is desperate for playing time in the second half of the season in the hopes of reviving his chances of returning to England’s squad ahead of the World Cup.
Mainoo isn’t necessarily eyeing a permanent transfer, but he feels that a brief loan spell would do. Jacobs also reveals that a host of Premier League clubs are equally interested in the player, including Newcastle United, Wolves, and West Ham United.
For their part, Il Messaggero believes that signing Mainoo remains a pipe dream for Lazio amidst the growing competition for his signature. The Italian newspaper adds that Napoli are also in the race, as they’re looking for midfield reinforcement after losing Kevin De Bruyne to injury.
