Lazio are searching the market for a new striker, as Fiorentina’s Roberto Piccoli is now at the top of the shortlist.
The Biancocelesti parted ways with Taty Castellanos in January and replaced him with Petar Ratkov, who has yet to open his goalscoring account. Despite his struggles last season, the Serbian is expected to stay in the Italian capital, with the management urging Gennaro Gattuso to help him settle at the club.
Nevertheless, the club is desperately lacking firepower, so a new acquisition is expected this summer, regardless of whether Boulaye Dia stays or leaves.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Lazio consider Piccoli as their top target to bolster the attack. The alternative option would be Sassuolo’s Andrea Pinamonti, but the Biancocelesti prefer the Fiorentina man.
The 25-year-old is an Atalanta youth product that had several experiences in the top flight. Last summer, Fiorentina spent €25 million to buy him from Cagliari. In his first season in Florence, he made 44 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing two assists.
In recent weeks, the Viola appointed Fabio Grosso as their new head coach. The 2006 World Cup hero intends to implement a 4-3-3 formation, with Moise Kean spearheading the charge. Therefore, Piccoli would likely have to settle for a place on the bench should he remain at the Artemio Franchi, especially in the absence of European football.
Hence, the Bergamo native could be open to a move to the Italian capital. However, Lazio will struggle to match his book value, especially after being restricted to a net-zero market. So it remains to be seen if Fiorentina are willing to loan him out with an option or an obligation to buy, as this remains the only plausible formula.
