Lazio have reportedly joined a long queue of clubs that are interested in the services of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The Background

The 29-year-old is a Manchester United youth product who went on to make a name for himself at Preston North End and Bristol City. He’s been playing his football at Burnley since January 2020, but his contract with the Championship club will expire at the end of the season, leaving his future up in the air. The Clarets are still trying to lock him down with a new deal, but they aren’t too optimistic about their chances.

Lazio Offer a Contract to Josh Brownhill

According to TBR Football, the Englishman’s situation has been gaining traction both in Britain and abroad, with several suitors looking to pounce on the opportunity to poach his services for free. The report claims that Lazio and Fiorentina have offered the player a contract.

Foreign Advantage

The Serie A duo have an advantage in the race as they can sign an out-of-contract player by February on a pre-contract agreement. Hence, English clubs like Crystal Palace, Leeds United, West Ham United, Everton and Brentford could be left trailing in the race as they’d have to wait until the summer to secure the midfielder’s signing due to the aforementioned stipulation.

Glasgow Threat

Nevertheless, this prohibition doesn’t apply to Glasgow rivals Celtic and Rangers who are located outside of England. Hence, the Scottish duo could be well-positioned to prevail in the race which also includes the likes of Bologna, Udinese, Trabzonspor and Besiktas.

Impressive Figures

This season, Browhill has contributed with nine goals and three assists in 22 appearances in the English Championship, and his impressive stats surely haven’t gone unnoticed judging by the number of suitors on his trail.
