Lazio and Napoli are reportedly prepared to go head-to-head for the services of Empoli stalwart Ardian Ismajli.
The 28-year-old is an Albanian defender who has been plying his trade in Italian football since signing for Spezia in the summer of 2020. A year later, he signed for Empoli, and he’s been a protagonist for the Tuscans ever since. This season, he has taken his game to a whole new level, helping the club register impressive defensive stats.
According to Il Mattino (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Ismajli’s expiring contract has attracted the interest of Lazio and Napoli who will be hoping to secure his signature on a free transfer for next season. As long as he doesn’t pen a deal extension with the Azzurri, the centre-back will be able to sign a pre-contract with a new club as early as February.
Ismajli could represent a real bargain given how he won’t command a hefty salary. Napoli coach Antonio Conte is desperate for defensive reinforcement as he found himself with limited options at the back, whereas the Biancocelesti are considering making some changes to their backline, and have also been linked with young Argentine defender Valentin Gomez in recent weeks.
