A circulating rumor on social media claims Lazio are considering a move for Colombian legend James Rodriguez.

Lazio Need a New Attacking Midfielder

The Biancocelesti are searching the market for a new attacking midfielder who can help Gennaro Gattuso implement his desired 4-2-3-1 formation. However, they missed out on Jonathan Asp Jensen, as Bayern Munich ended up selling him to Deportivo La Coruña, while their long-time target Jacopo Fazzini will soon join Cagliari.

James Rodriguez Reappears as a Lazio Target

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Lazio could turn to Rodriguez, who was already on their shortlist two years ago. The transfer market reporter claims that the Aquile are considering whether to make a move for the 35-year-old, who is now a free agent after his time in Minnesota ended.

The Rise & Fall of James Rodriguez

Rodriguez is a well-travelled attacking midfielder who made a name for himself at Porto and Monaco before reaching stardom during the 2014 World Cup, cementing his status as the tournament’s ultimate breakout star.

The Colombian’s exploits on the global stage earned him a transfer to Real Madrid, but he never quite fulfilled his promise. He then went on to represent Bayern Munich and Everton, before embarking on various experiences in Qatar, Greece, Brazil, Spain and the United States.

Why Rodriguez to Lazio Remains Unlikely

With all due respect to Galletti’s sources, recruiting Rodriguez remains unlikely based on the current evidence. Due to their shaky finances, the Biancocelesti have been restricted to a net-zero transfer market. Therefore, they would certainly struggle to offer a star like James a competitive salary.

Moreover, pursuing a veteran in the autumn of his career doesn’t align with the strategy adopted by Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani, who prefers to buy young (and often unsung) players who can later generate a profit for the club.
