Although the official decision on Marco Baroni has yet to be communicated, the casting for the new Lazio head coach has already begun. The Biancocelesti management is widely expected to part ways with the 61-year-old who started his tenure on a brilliant note but gradually lost the plot in the second half of the season.
Between December and May, the club only earned 11 points from 13 home fixtures, and only registered a single win at the Olimpico, coming at the expense of Monza. Baroni has thus equalled the negative record set by former Lazio manager Davide Ballardini between September 2009 and February 2010, reveals Il Messaggero.
According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, a meeting between Baroni and the club’s sporting director, Angelo Fabiani, will take place on Tuesday, but the writing is already on the wall. Hence, it remains to be seen if an official statement will be made in the aftermath.
The source also reveals a long list of potential candidates who could be considered for the role. This includes Lazio legends Alessandro Nesta and Miroslav Klose, although their CVs remain relatively humble. Sergio Conceicao is certainly more experienced, but his agent Jorge Mendes doesn’t share a good rapport with Claudio Lotito.
The same report also mentions Matias Almeyda and Patrick Vieira, while the return of Maurizio Sarri has suddenly become a concrete theory according to many sources, and a popular demand from a section of the Lazio supporters.
In the meantime, La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) claims that Baroni could be set for an immediate rebound, as Torino are looking to sway him with a three-year offer. The Granata are reportedly unhappy with Paolo Vanoli’s work this season, and they’re looking to resort to a more experienced profile.
