Lazio ultras set to extend Stadio Olimpico boycott for Atalanta visit

Lazio face Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday evening, but the stadium is set to be subdued as organised supporters press on with their protest.

Fan groups have declared what they call a civilised campaign against president Claudio Lotito, unhappy with how the club has been run in recent years, and aim to push him to sell.

The Curva Nord began the action a couple of weeks ago by abandoning their seats for the Serie A meeting with Genoa, urging the wider fanbase to follow. Only 4,000 were inside the ground for a game Lazio won 3-2.

Head coach Maurizio Sarri has tried to mediate in recent days, yet the organised groups say they will continue their protest when Atalanta visit.

"It will be another test of devotion and faith, not a battle we wage based on results. The protest is spontaneous; everyone is free to do what they believe is best. We decided to celebrate our Valentine’s Day at Ponte Milvio because we love Lazio. It’s unconditional love." They were speaking to Radio Laziale.

A bigger decision looms on 4 March, when Lazio host Atalanta in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg, a crucial date for the season. Whether the boycott will be paused for that tie remains unclear.
