Amid the Champions League night action in the men's game, the finalists for the Subway Women's League Cup have been decided but will we see a new winner?
The League Cup was added to the calendar back in 2011 and this year the 15th final will be held at Ashton Gate in Bristol on 15th. Chelsea and Manchester United are the two teams who will compete for the prize and it's a familiar fixture with those two sides also facing off in two of the last three FA Cup finals (both of which the Blues won).
The Blues defeated Manchester City thanks to Wieke Kaptein's goal – a result that Sonia Bompastor will be hoping bodes well for the remainder of the WSL season with the Citizens six points clear at the top of the table.
Of course, Bompastor's side won this competition last season after a 2-1 win over City at Pride Park in Derby, which was the club's third League Cup trophy from six finals played thus far with their seventh appearance soon to come. Should Chelsea beat United then they would draw level with City on four trophies – something the blue side of Manchester achieved in six finals.
That leaves Arsenal then as the competition's most successful side with seven trophy wins from 10 final appearances.
Marc Skinner's side won the tactical battle against the Gunners in Wednesday night's semi-final in blustery conditions with Elisabeth Terland's goal the decisive factor – also helped by Olivia Smith being sent off during the second half after picking up two yellows.
This will be United's first appearance in a League Cup final and they will only be the eight team to reach this stage in those 15 years.
Birmingham City have previously reached the final three times while Notts County had done so twice if you include when the club was formerly known as Lincoln.
Bristol City are the only other team to reach the final, which was quite the achievement in the 2020/21 season however they came up against a ruthless Chelsea team who put six past them at Vicarage Road.
March's final looks like it will be more competitive than that but Chelsea will no doubt be the strong favourites to lift the trophy once again.
