Leagues Cup Matchday 2 Preview: FC Cincinnati vs. Pumas | OneFootball

We’ve reached Matchday 2 of the Leagues Cup, and Friday brings together two of the strongest teams from their respective leagues. It’s not a stretch to say this is the most entertaining matchup on the schedule.

The Contender vs. The Surprise

On one side is FC Cincinnati, fresh off a convincing 3-1 win over Pachuca in its tournament opener. The Orange and Blue looked every bit like a legitimate title contender—assuming they make it out of the group stage, which becomes a whole lot easier when you start with three points, especially with all three group-stage matches being played at TQL Stadium.

On the other side are Pumas, who delivered one of the tournament’s biggest surprises for all the wrong reasons, getting thrashed 3-0 by Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium. Esteban Solari’s squad entered the competition in solid form. After finishing as Liga MX runners-up last season under Efraín Juárez, they opened the Apertura 2026 campaign with six points from a possible nine under their new manager. Then Charlotte happened. Now they’re staring at the very real possibility of an embarrassing early exit, meaning Friday’s match is nothing short of a must-win.

The contrasting situations make this one fascinating. Cincinnati can practically smell the knockout rounds, while Pumas are playing with their backs firmly against the wall. Translation: nobody can afford to sit back.

Pumas will wrap up the group stage against Columbus Crew on Tuesday, August 11. If they somehow manage to reach the knockout rounds after such a disastrous start, it would qualify as a respectable comeback considering they landed in one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

Still, the road ahead is anything but simple.

Pumas Will Need a Win, and Help

The Mexican side no longer controls its own destiny. By opening the tournament with a defeat, Pumas lost the chance to collect the maximum nine points available.

Now Solari’s men need to win their final two matches just to stay alive. Even then, they’ll also need the fourth-best Liga MX team in the competition to finish with no more than six points. If four Mexican clubs surpass that mark, Pumas are officially eliminated. And because the team currently owns a dreadful minus-three goal differential, they’ll also have to chip away at that deficit to strengthen their case for a quarterfinal berth.

Meanwhile, Pat Noonan’s side has life exactly where every coach wants it—in its own hands. Cincinnati also closes the group stage at home against Atlas, meaning the table is perfectly set for another three points and a comfortable trip to the next round.

Columbus Crew vs. Pachuca

Pachuca faces another brutal challenge when it travels to face Columbus Crew, one of the teams that made the strongest first impression in this year’s Leagues Cup.

The Matchday 2 showdown features two clubs arriving with very different levels of urgency. Columbus is looking to take another giant step toward qualification, while the Tuzos simply need points if they want to avoid packing their bags early.

The Crew opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Atlas, confirming once again why they remain one of MLS’s most polished sides. They dictated possession for long stretches and once again turned set pieces into a nightmare for the opposition.

Pachuca, meanwhile, let its opener slip away against FC Cincinnati. The Liga MX club struck first but eventually collapsed in a 3-1 defeat. That means another loss could leave the Tuzos needing a miracle rather than a game plan.

Charlotte FC vs. Atlas

Another matchup featuring teams with completely different levels of desperation.

Dean Smith’s Charlotte FC comes in riding high after delivering a statement 3-0 victory over Pumas, while Hernán Crespo’s Atlas arrives after falling 3-1 to Columbus Crew.

Charlotte has everything lined up to take another step toward the knockout rounds, which would be a tremendous achievement for a club that recently lost Wilfried Zaha. Advancing deep into the Leagues Cup would be a significant statement for the franchise and proof that life after Zaha might not be so bleak after all.

Atlas, meanwhile, looks like a team searching for answers that simply aren’t there. The Rojinegros were beaten 3-1 by Columbus in their tournament opener and are also coming off a 2-0 home loss to Monterrey in Liga MX. Yes, they somehow have six league points, but this is also a team that has made a habit of falling apart the moment expectations begin to rise.

The prediction? Another MLS victory seems to be the safest bet.
