Dispatching Houston Dynamo, even by a 4 – 1 margin, isn’t exactly the toughest task. So this fixture against a very strong San Diego FC would be a better test of Tigres mettle. They did not fail.

An absolute rocket of a shot from Ozziel Herrera proved too much heat for SDFC’s keeper Pablo Sisnega in the 31st minute. The rebound fell to Ángel Correa who skillfully controlled and passed into the goal. San Diego’s Thomas Ángel would equalize in the 54th minute with a deflected shot. But Ángel Correa would once again make SDFC pay for a defensive blunder, taking the ball and hammering it home for his fourth goal of the tournament, and ensuring Tigres stayed undefeated and atop the standings.

Inter Miami CF 2 – 2 Necaxa

Inter Miami won 5 – 4 in the penalty shootout.Saturday 8/2 @ Chase Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, FL

It didn’t take much time for this fixture to get spicy. Messi went down in the 6th minute after colliding with the Necaxa captain; he was down the tunnel to the dressing room by the 10th. Miami took a little revenge when Telasco Segovia struck a lovely shot from the top of the box into the corner. New signing Rodrigo de Paul got the assist, though it was Allende’s run that created the hesitation in the Necaxa defense, allowing Segovia the space to shoot. That celebration was short-lived, however, when Maxi Falcón was shown a straight red for DOGSO in the 17th minute. Fifteen minutes later the scorelines were level.

In the second half, Necaxa had a goal called back for offsides, but then Cristian Calderón earned his second yellow and trip to the locker room in the 60th. Both teams were square again with 10 men. Ricardo Monreal put Necaxa up in the 82nd and it looked like it was their night, but a 92nd minute header from Jordi Alba off a set-piece ensured we would have a shootout.

Messi’s injury status is unknown at this time.

Club América 3 – 3 Minnesota United

Club América won 8 – 7 in the shootoutSaturday 8/2 @ Shell Energy Stadium, Houston, TX

Article image:Leagues Cup Phase 2 Results

With Minnesota having to travel over a thousand miles down to Houston, the crowd was definitely more América friendly. But that did matter… this match had it all! Six goals in regulation. A red card. A penalty shootout that went into sudden death. It’s exhausting simply typing about it! Go watch the replay. You won’t be disappointed. Despite the shootout loss, Minnesota remain in fourth place in the standings.

Portland Timbers 1 – 0 Querétaro

Saturday 8/2 @ Providence Park, Portland, OR

Article image:Leagues Cup Phase 2 Results

This match isn’t here because it was good. To be fair, it wasn’t. The two teams combined for 14 shots total; only 3 on frame. Portland’s goal came from one of their five corners, when the ball fell at Cristhian Paredes’ boot only a few feet from the net. When Querétaro’s Jonathan Perlaza drew two yellow cards in quick succession right before halftime (the first for a dangerous tackle, the second for some choice words directly at the official), their night was over.

This game was included because Portland are now one of three six-point teams in the tournament, sitting in second place.

Seattle Sounders 2 – 1 Santos

Sunday 8/3 @ Lumen Field, Seattle, WA

Article image:Leagues Cup Phase 2 Results

Seattle struck quickly in this fixture, forcing an own goal after Paul Rothrock put in a dangerous cross. It was their eighth goal in under 55 minutes of open play. Seattle stayed on the front foot until halftime, but could not increase their lead. It would take into the 72nd minute before Georgi Minoungou’s wicked right footed shot would strike the net, a moment of beauty that would be tainted by an excessive celebration that earned him a second yellow. He’d been on the pitch less than ten minutes! Although Santos would earn a consolation goal in the 96th, Seattle secured the win and occupy the top of the table.

Theme: Shootouts

Phase two featured eight shootouts in the eighteen games, three more than the previous phase. To date, the MLS has only won four; Liga MX nine. It’s not a great reflection on the MLS, only winning 31% of the shootouts.
