The change added muscle around Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Rodrigo De Paul, with Paredes having started Argentina’s previous two matches.

He was cautioned for elbowing Rodri in the back, then became involved in a brief flare-up that included a shove on Dani Olmo.

It was his second caution of this World Cup, following the last-16 meeting with Austria, 2-0 on 22 July, when he was booked eight minutes after coming on.
