Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match ban by Fifa for incidents during Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain, 1-0 after extra time. The federation also banned Nahuel Molina for seven games and said suspensions will carry over to the next representative fixtures under article 69 of its disciplinary code.
The flashpoint came at full time on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, near New York. It began when Molina struck Spain midfielder Rodri, then Paredes threw Eric Garcia to the turf, grabbing him by the throat, before flooring Gavi.
Thiago Almada and Gavi each received a one-match ban, while Argentina staff member Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches. Spain coach Luis De la Fuente later called the Argentines’ behaviour unacceptable.
A bodycam clip from referee Slavko Vinči shows him asking Lionel Messi to calm Paredes, already on a booking, adding that he did not want to send him off.
Argentina’s federation was fined 321,000 dollars, part suspended, for breaches including use of a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations, inappropriate team behaviour, discrimination and match security. It must play its next two home games with capacity limited to 50%, with one of those matches suspended.
After beating England 2-1 to reach the final, Argentina’s players unfurled a banner declaring the Malvinas are Argentine.
