Rafael Leao would prefer a move to the Premier League this summer, with Aston Villa emerging as a potential destination.
The AC Milan forward is holding out for interest from one of Europe’s top five leagues, and has cooled on the idea of a switch to Turkey. Gazzetta dello Sport reports the England appeal is strong.
Milan are open to selling, too. The Rossoneri made clear at the end of May that Leao could leave, and need the funds to reshape their squad. They are seeking around €50m to €60m, despite the 27-year-old carrying a €175m release clause.
Their need to sell is pressing. Milan must offload Leao to finance a move for Genk playmaker Konstantinos Karetsas, having already spent close to €100m on Goncalo Ramos and Mario Gila. New coach Ruben Amorim prefers an attacking midfielder to a winger.
Villa fit the picture on paper. Having banked significant fees from the sales of Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, they possess the financial firepower to fund a marquee addition. Champions League football adds to their appeal.
Question marks remain over the fit, however. It is unclear whether Unai Emery views Leao as the right profile, given the Portuguese forward’s inconsistency, or whether the player would ultimately choose Villa Park.
Interest has been limited elsewhere so far. Barcelona and Manchester United have sounded out his availability without making formal offers, while Galatasaray have proposed personal terms without opening talks with Milan.
His salary complicates matters, too. Leao earns around €7m net a season, including bonuses, a figure that narrows his list of realistic suitors considerably.
He is targeting a permanent move to settle his future. At most, Leao would consider a loan with an obligation to buy, and a final decision is expected after the World Cup.
Time is a factor for all parties. Leao is due to join Milan’s pre-season camp in Australia within days, with no breakthrough yet in sight.
