Lebogang Manyama talks about what's missing at Cape Town City FC!
A sense of frustration, but also a thread of unwavering belief, defines the mood at Cape Town City FC as they navigate a turbulent start to life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Languishing second from bottom with only three points from their opening six matches, the team finds itself in an unexpected early-season battle.
For assistant coach Lebogang Manyama, the struggle is a complex puzzle with three distinct pieces. In a revealing interview, he dissected the challenges holding back a team that was expected to fare much better.
The first, and perhaps most significant, is the brutal reality of the league itself. Manyama describes a division fueled by pure ambition, where the football is faster and more physically demanding. "The football is a bit different, obviously... it’s obviously the second division and everybody wants to go up,”] he noted, highlighting the relentless fight his team encounters every match.
This leads directly to the second issue: a painful lack of composure in front of goal. Despite creating opportunities, the team has been plagued by a failure to convert. Manyama insists the results are a misleading picture of their performances, pointing to this as the central cause of their disappointing points tally. ["If only we had scored the chances that we missed, I think we would have been telling a different story.
Compounding these on-field issues is the third factor: a deliberate and long-term strategic shift. The club is in the midst of a significant rebuild, betting on youth for a sustainable future. “We started a process that we knew, just restructuring the whole new team. We probably have the most Under-23s...”, Manyama explained, asking for patience as this young squad acclimatizes to the rigors of professional football.
As they prepare for their upcoming clash against Midlands Wanderers, the mission for Manyama and his young team is clear: to accelerate their adaptation and transform their potential into the hard currency of points, finally turning their compelling story into a winning one.
