Lech Poznań’s hierarchy have made light of the challenge involved in securing Luis Palma on a permanent deal, with the club’s chairman quipping that a dip in form might help bring the winger’s price down…

The Honduran international has impressed since arriving on a season-long loan from Celtic, quickly becoming one of the Polish side’s standout performers.

Poznań have been keen to extend his stay beyond the current campaign, although the financial outlay required would eclipse any transfer fee the club has previously paid.

Celtic are believed to value the 26-year-old at around £3.5 million, a figure Lech president Piotr Rutkowski has unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate down through regular discussions with the Celtic board.

With only days remaining in the transfer window, chairman Karol Klimczak has conceded that completing a deal in this window now appears improbable.

Speaking via Glasgow Times, Klimczak said: “I wish we could negotiate the terms of the buyout. The paradox is that if Luis were to stop scoring and assisting now, maybe we’d somehow manage to convince Celtic that the transfer fee is excessive.”

“We know Robert Lewandowski was told not to score goals for Barcelona to avoid paying a bonus to Bayern Munich, but we wouldn’t do that! But the position at the moment is we still don’t know if we can sign Luis permanently.”

Palma has been in productive form for Lech Poznań this season, contributing directly to 13 goals across all competitions.

Despite his current loan spell in Poland, the winger remains tied to Celtic for another two and a half years, meaning the Scottish champions retain long-term control over his future.

Poznań currently sit eighth in Ekstraklasa but are remarkably only four points off the top of the table after 18 matches played.

Given the remarkable nature of Polish top-flight football this season, Palma’s side are just seven points off bottom as well.
