Lee Cattermole has begun his managerial career at National League Gateshead, signing a two-year deal at the International Stadium and inheriting the squad left by former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

“I saw Dick Advocaat in tears at the World Cup and he’s an incredible manager,” he said. “They’ve all had an impression on me, everyone of them. I never made excuses as a player. I never said a manager doesn’t suit me. I always adapted my game and found a way into the team.” As reported by Sunderland Echo, he was speaking as he steps into the dugout with Gateshead.

Steve McClaren handed Cattermole his debut at 17 in a Tyne-Tees derby against Newcastle United in January 2006. He then became Middlesbrough’s youngest captain when he wore the armband at Fulham on the final day of 2005/06.

Gareth Southgate succeeded McClaren before a move to Wigan Athletic brought Cattermole under Steve Bruce. He later reunited with Bruce at Sunderland, beginning a decade on Wearside under Martin O’Neill, Sam Allardyce, David Moyes, Dick Advocaat, Paolo Di Canio and Gus Poyet.

“Steve McClaren, as an organiser, coaching, organising, he was unbelievable,” he said. “Steve Bruce, he was a man manager. Sam Allardyce, he was totally different, all about numbers and where to get to on the pitch. Gus Poyet, he was incredible.”
