Lee Cattermole has been appointed Gateshead’s first-team manager on a two-year deal. The club said in a statement that the 38-year-old will commence his duties immediately at the International Stadium.
The former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder took the role after talks with interim chairman Graham Wood over the last fortnight, stepping into senior management.
Cattermole made 272 Premier League appearances for Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic. He ended his playing career with Dutch side VVV-Venlo in 2020, then moved into coaching.
He has worked in Middlesbrough’s academy and in first-team setups at Bristol Rovers and Burnley. He also coached the Northern Irish FA’s under-17s and narrowly missed out on the Hartlepool United job just over a month ago.
He will work alongside Ben Clark, who signed a long-term deal earlier this month to remain first-team coach. Cattermole is excited by the opportunity, wants to build patiently with clear standards, and aims to learn and develop the club’s identity together.
Following Wood’s return as chairman, appointing a first-team manager was identified as the immediate priority and Cattermole emerged as the standout candidate from the applicants. He arrives with experience of over 250 Premier League games and has worked with Gareth Southgate and Martin O’Neill.
