Leeds United are moving towards the permanent sale of Isaac Schmidt, with a switch to Young Boys in the works after last season’s loan.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old is due to depart two years after joining from FC St Gallen, after interest also emerged from FC Basel.
Signed as a full-back, Schmidt did not convince Daniel Farke in that role and was used sparingly. He made 12 Championship cameos totalling 71 minutes as Leeds won the title, with two FA Cup starts.
He spent last season with Werder Bremen, featuring in 19 Bundesliga games, six of them starts. The once-capped Swiss international played both sides of defence and further forward on either flank, but the loan was not made permanent.
Lucas Perri is not currently permitted to move on. He reported for testing at Leeds Beckett this week and will train at Thorp Arch, and is presently the only senior goalkeeper to have played top flight football last season. He has been linked with Torino, having lost the first-choice spot after a pair of high-profile mistakes that Farke criticised.
Schmidt’s departure would follow Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow, who have joined Arsenal and Manchester United after their contracts expired.
Leeds are waiting on Southampton’s Shea Charles and are interested in Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemović. The Bosnian is seen as an ideal replacement for Pascal Struijk after his move to Brighton this summer, and a club record fee could be needed for the former Juventus man.
