Leeds terminate Max Wober contract, sell-on clause revealed, Schalke move ‘to follow’ | OneFootball

Leeds United have mutually agreed to end Max Wober’s contract a year early, with The Athletic reporting he is on the verge of joining Schalke and undergoing medical tests in Germany ahead of a free transfer.

Wober arrived from RB Salzburg in January 2023 for £10 million on a four-and-a-half year deal to 2027. He made 28 appearances in all competitions, then spent two seasons out on loan.

A steady spell at Borussia Monchengladbach brought 25 Bundesliga outings, before a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season. He featured only three times for Bremen, who declined a permanent option.

The Austrian wanted to return for pre-season, yet he was left out of the USA tour squad. A permanent exit now appears only a matter of time.

A sell-on clause in his 2023 move entitles RB Salzburg to a share of any future fee, and after an injury-hit year any sale was likely to be minimal. Ending the deal removes a Premier League wage and closes a difficult Elland Road stint, with Wober among those who used relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach in 2023.

Schalke spent the past three seasons in Germany’s second tier and have just been promoted back to the Bundesliga. They are among the country’s most historic clubs, winners of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.
