Leeds United 1 Brentford 1: Schade scores in Elland Road draw | OneFootball

Kevin Schade's first goal of the season was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Brentford were held to a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

Schade's first-half effort looked to be enough for the three points, but Calvert-Lewin struck with 11 minutes remaining and it ended honours even in West Yorkshire.

Keith Andrews made two changes to the side who beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Jaidon Anthony, playing against the side he spent the 2023/24 season on loan with, made his first league start for the Bees while Mikkel Damsgaard also came into the starting XI. El Hadji Malick Diouf was named on the bench.

Brentford, wearing the Kingsman-inspired away kit for the first time, had the first effort on goal inside the opening eight minutes, but Igor Thiago's back-post volley from a tight angle was straight at James Trafford. The England international goalkeeper was then well-positioned to collect a Nathan Collins header moments later.

Damsgaard tested Trafford with a curling shot and Ethan Ampadu sent a speculative effort comfortably wide of Caoimhín Kelleher's goal at the other end as the Bees continued to control the contest against a well-organised Leeds defence.

Five minutes before the break, the west Londoners got their reward for a dominant first-half display. Mamadou Sangaré swept the ball to his right for Anthony, whose cross was headed back into a central position. Sangaré picked it up again and opted to go to his left and Keane Lewis-Potter. His near-post delivery was turned into the far corner of Trafford's goal by a sublime Schade flick.

Leeds made two changes at the interval but it didn't take long for the Bees, orchestrated by Sangaré, to dictate the game again.

Their first set-piece of the second half created the first opportunity. Collins beat Ampadu to Vitaly Janelt's deep corner to loop it back towards the penalty spot before Damsgaard got a bit too much on his header and it went over the frame.

Kelleher, largely a spectator for the previous hour, was called into action for the first time and made a smart stop to deny James Justin after the left-back had cut inside and pulled the trigger from 25 yards.

Brentford thought they should have had a penalty at the other end shortly afterwards. Dango Ouattara, five minutes after his introduction from the bench, led a lightning counter attack down the right flank. Eventually, he cut inside and switched the ball to Schade, who took a touch before going down after Jayden Bogle appeared to step on his foot. Referee Tony Harrington waved the appeals away.

Some superb recovery defending from Lewis-Potter prevented the hosts from equalising following a breakaway of their own at the other end. After clearing the ball from a Bees corner, Lukas Nmecha poked the ball forward to put Dan James, positioned just inside his own half, through on goal. Under pressure from Lewis-Potter, the Welsh winger sent a wild shot high and wide of the target.

Leeds were level, however, with just over 10 minutes remaining. Ampadu played the ball from the right wing into Nmecha inside the box. He took a touch and fired the ball across the six-yard box where Calvert-Lewin tapped into an empty net.

Thiago nearly restored the lead instantly. The Brazilian's header from an Ouattara cross was parried by Trafford and, at full stretch, he could only turn the rebound into the side netting.

Anton Stach sent a stoppage-time free-kick wide of the mark as both teams made it four points from their opening two league fixtures.

Andrews: A solid away point

Keith Andrews reflected on Brentford's away fixture against Leeds United.

"I’m really proud of what we produced. In the first half, we played some pretty impressive football," said Andrews.

"We were in a good place and controlled pretty much the whole half, which isn’t easy to do when you come here.

"In the second half, it was a different game. They made attacking subs and changed their system.

"Overall, it’s a solid away point."

Schade on Leeds stalemate

Kevin Schade shared his thoughts after Brentford's 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

"We need to keep working on the good things. We dominated the first half and probably needed to score more goals and put in more crosses in the final third," said the German forward.

"In the second half, they changed a few things and we couldn’t adapt enough."

On scoring his first goal of 2026/27 and his ambitions for this year, he added: "I want to achieve more than the other seasons, but I’ll take it game by game, work on things and then the goals will come."
