Leeds United end Max Wober contract early amid sell-on clause and injury context | OneFootball

Leeds United have mutually agreed to end Max Wober’s contract a year early, drawing a line under the defender’s short Elland Road spell. The 28-year-old made 28 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The Athletic reports that Wober is in Germany for medical tests ahead of a free transfer to Schalke. His departure would come at no fee following the termination.

Wober joined from RB Salzburg for £10 million in January 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year deal due to run to 2027. He spent the past two seasons on loan. He made 25 Bundesliga outings for Borussia Monchengladbach, then suffered a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season and played only three games, with the option to buy left untaken.

Wober expressed a wish to return for pre-season, but he was among senior players omitted from the USA tour squad. A permanent exit has looked likely since.

A sell-on clause is understood to have been included in his £10 million move from Salzburg, entitling the Austrian club to a share of any future transfer. Combined with his injury-hit campaign, that meant any sale was likely to bring in a minimal fee, while ending his deal removes a Premier League wage from Leeds’ books.

Schalke were promoted back to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier. They are one of Germany’s storied clubs, with honours including the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.
