Leeds United have put Lukas Nmecha contract talks on hold, according to Sports Mole, leaving his position uncertain. The report says the club have relaxed their efforts to agree terms with the 27-year-old, whose two-year deal expires next summer. Nmecha joined Leeds United on a free transfer from Wolfsburg before the 2025/26 campaign.

Sports Mole says Leeds have become non-committal about extending the striker’s stay. Citing TEAMtalk, the report says Nmecha could leave in January if his situation does not improve. A move after January 1 matters because he could agree a pre-contract with an overseas club for the following summer.

Leeds have secured new deals for Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Jayden Bogle, while Nmecha’s position remains unresolved. Sports Mole adds that Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form has left Nmecha behind the former England international. Leeds sit third after four unbeaten league matches.

Why Leeds United can justify waiting

Nmecha contributed seven goals and three assists in 37 appearances last season, including six Premier League goals and one league assist. However, his league role remained secondary, with 10 starts from 31 appearances.

This season, his opportunities have become even narrower. Nmecha has made three Premier League appearances and played 53 minutes, while Calvert-Lewin has scored twice in the 4-1 win over Newcastle.

That is important because regular minutes build rhythm, and Nmecha lacks them. His 85% passing completion rate under pressure reinforces the value he can offer when Leeds need cleaner attacking connections.

Nmecha can lead the line or operate wide, while his link play can help Leeds connect midfield with the final third. Yet the bigger issue remains usage. A long contract makes more sense for a player who commands regular starts, whereas Leeds can assess Nmecha over the next few months before committing more wages.

Nmecha’s deal expires in June 2027, so Leeds must decide whether his performances justify an extension or a January sale offers better value. Sports Mole reports that the club have not ruled out a winter departure. That gives Nmecha reason to make each substitute appearance count, while Leeds retain room to recruit if another forward suits Farke’s plans.

For now, the numbers support caution rather than a rushed decision. Nmecha has shown he can contribute, but Calvert-Lewin’s emergence has changed his role. Leeds United can keep talks frozen, monitor his minutes and revisit the situation before the January window. His shot volume can still create danger in short spells, but tight-area losses affect consistency.
