Leeds United are exploring a £13m move for Werder Bremen midfielder Romano Schmid this month, as they look to sustain their Premier League momentum. Fabrizio Romano reports that talks are under way.

Daniel Farke’s side beat Fulham 1-0 at Elland Road last time out, with Lukas Nmecha striking late. They have adapted well after promotion from the Championship.

Schmid, 25, has 31 caps for Austria and joined Bremen in 2019. His contract runs to 2027, so he is due to become a free agent next year.

He has made 175 appearances for the club in all competitions, including 18 this season, and scored 16 goals. He can operate as an attacking midfielder or on either flank.

Leeds were linked with him alongside West Ham and Fulham last summer, but he remained in Germany. Additional depth could help Farke’s squad through the run-in.

With his deal edging down, a January exit would not surprise. A £13m fee could be smart business and might leave room for other targets.

If he arrived, Schmid would add competition behind the striker and push Brenden Aaronson for minutes. He could also offer a different creative profile.

Leeds visit Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the club’s new ground, on Monday 26th January. The window runs until Monday 2nd February, and time will tell if reinforcements arrive before that trip.
