Terry Yorath, the former Wales midfielder and father of Match of the Day host Gabby Logan, has died aged 75 after a short illness.

Wales Online reports that Logan left Wednesday night’s live Match of the Day because of a family emergency, and Mark Chapman stepped in to finish the programme.

In a statement, his children called him a quiet, kind and gentle father, and said they take comfort that he will be reunited with Daniel. He also leaves Gabby, Louise and Jordan, while Daniel died in 1992 aged 15 from a genetic heart condition.

Yorath spent nine years at Leeds United from 1967, making 199 appearances and winning the First Division in 1974. He reached finals of the FA Cup, European Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup, becoming the first Welshman to play in a European Cup final.

After Elland Road he played for Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur and Vancouver Whitecaps, then joined Bradford City as assistant coach during the 1985 Valley Parade fire, which killed 56 and injured 270.

He won 59 caps for Wales, captaining his country 42 times, and retired in 1986 after a single Swansea City appearance. He later managed Wales, Swansea twice and Cardiff City, guiding Swansea to promotion from Division Four while serving part-time with the national team.
