Leeds United drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Croke Park, then lost 5-4 on penalties, with debutant James Trafford and Wilfried Gnonto catching the eye in a historic fixture. It was the first football match at the stadium since 2009 and the first club game staged there.
According to Leeds Live, Manchester United led on 16 minutes when Joshua Zirkzee finished past Trafford after Bryan Mbeumo had beaten Jaka Bijol. Leeds levelled on 29 as Daniel James stole possession and set up Brenden Aaronson from close range.
Introduced at half-time, Gnonto and Noah Okafor injected threat, creating chances that went untaken. Manchester United threatened too, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the bar, and no winner emerged.
The shootout went Manchester United's way 5-4. Fernandes missed, but Harry Wilson and James Justin also failed from the spot for Leeds.
Trafford earned nine for calm use of the ball and a sharp save from Bryan Mbeumo, while James took eight for forcing the equaliser. Gnonto and Okafor also received eight for lively cameos, with Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu on seven.
At the other end, Lukas Nmecha was marked two, Ao Tanaka four and Dominic Calvert-Lewin four. Manager Daniel Farke was given seven, his rotated side improving after the interval, although creativity through the middle remained scarce.
