Leeds have been searching for defensive reinforcement throughout the winter market.

A move for Ben Godfrey was sought, but a deal has yet to be agreed with Everton for the defender.

Looking to sign Souttar could be an indication that the club has moved on to other targets as we approach the 11pm transfer deadline this evening.

Leeds face competition in the race to sign Souttar, with Sheffield United having also enquired about the centre-back.

Souttar has fallen down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium under Enzo Maresca, making just three appearances in the Championship so far this season.

The defender is currently competing in the Asian Cup with Australia, with the Socceroos in the quarter final stages of the international tournament.

He has been a key player for Australia, competing in all four of their games so far.

The 25-year-old featured 12 times in the Premier League for the Foxes last year, but the team suffered relegation to the Championship with an 18th place finish.

The arrival of Maresca as manager has raised doubts over the player’s future with the club, having been unable to break into his first team plans.

A move to Leeds could get him back to playing regularly, with Leeds also competing for promotion straight back to the top flight.

Souttar has a contract until the summer of 2028, but could be open to his sale due to his lack of game time under Maresca.

Leeds are currently 12 points behind Leicester in the Championship table, with the Whites sitting fourth.

Leicester lead the way at the top of the standings, but both clubs have played a game more than their rivals Southampton and Ipswich Town.

The Yorkshire outfit trails the Saints by just one point, with Ipswich only a point further ahead.

It is set to be a very tight battle at the top in the race for the two automatic promotion places, but the Foxes have carved out a comfortable gap over the chasing pack in recent weeks.

Next up for Leeds is a clash away to Bristol City on Friday night.

Souttar could be a smart addition at Leeds

If Leicester are willing to part ways with the defender, especially to a promotion rival, then this could be a good addition to the team.

It has been surprising just how far down the pecking order Souttar has been under Maresca.

Souttar is a strong defensive unit, but is also quite comfortable in possession and could be a good fit for Farke’s style of play.

The terms of any deal will ultimately determine how good of a move this could be, but his addition to the team should strengthen Farke’s options at the back.
