Leeds United are pursuing Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemovic as they reshape the defence after Pascal Struijk’s exit, with Sunderland and Bournemouth also in the race.
An Italian reporter on X indicated Leeds are currently ahead of those rivals and that the first official bid is anticipated on Tuesday, while TeamTalk reports Sassuolo value the 23-year-old at £34m.
Last summer was Adam Underwood’s first as sporting director, and Leeds navigated a tight budget. They spent a little over £100m on 10 signings, two on free transfers and none costing more than £20m.
Deals for Anton Stach at £19.9m and Gabi Gudmundsson at £10m look shrewd, with Gudmundsson now a £30m target for Chelsea. Leeds missed out on Igor Paixao, while Sunderland landed Reinildo Mandava, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki.
Muharemovic, a left-footed Bosnia defender starring in Serie A, was sent off against Switzerland at the World Cup but started all three matches for which he was available.
Struijk’s £20m move to Brighton ended his eight-year spell and funds a replacement, though Leeds will likely need more to match his impact. Meeting £34m would make Muharemovic the club’s second-costliest signing, behind Rutter.
