FC Köln are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Belgian international Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds United, with decision-makers at the club keen to reinforce their defensive unit ahead of the 2026/27 season. According to Bild, as relayed by Sport Witness, a transfer could prove expensive given his contract at Elland Road runs until 2029. Bornauw joined Leeds last summer for around £5 million from VfL Wolfsburg, signing a four-year contract, but has managed just five Premier League starts and 771 minutes of action under Daniel Farke.

Leeds United’s Dilemma Over A Marginalised Star

During the winter transfer window, Köln reached an agreement in principle to sign Bornauw, but Leeds United blocked the move due to a shortage of defensive cover. The Belgian stayed put and earned more game time in January and February before returning to the bench. Seven of his nine Premier League appearances came during that late-January and early-February stretch, before Farke restored him to a peripheral role. His market value, per Transfermarkt, dropped from €7 million in June 2025 to €5 million in December, then recovered to €8 million by March 2026, which signals that despite the limited role, his stock has rebounded.

Bornauw made a one-minute cameo in Leeds’ final Premier League match of the 2025/26 season, a 3-0 defeat to West Ham on 24 May, and the Whites are now reportedly prepared to sanction his departure in the summer window. Köln are still pursuing a loan arrangement, as a permanent deal would be costly given the length of his contract.

Leeds United Must Make A Decisive Call This Summer

Leeds United should be actively targeting a new centre-back this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Bornauw’s long-term future, with several candidates already identified by Farke’s recruitment team. That situation makes a decision on Bornauw unavoidable.

Farke is a manager who speaks candidly with his players, as his treatment of Patrick Bamford last summer showed. He would almost certainly sit down with Bornauw and lay out exactly where he stands. We feel that Bornauw is a capable deputy, a 6ft 3in Belgian international with Bundesliga pedigree, but not part of the first-choice picture at Elland Road. With Leeds pushing for a new centre-back and Pascal Struijk’s future also seemingly uncertain, another season on the fringes would be wasteful for both parties.

Farke’s smartest move is to sanction a loan exit to Köln and use that freed-up squad space and wage contribution to invest in a starting-quality replacement. Bornauw himself is considered a hero at Köln after helping them avoid relegation in 2021, making a return personally significant for the player. A motivated Bornauw playing regularly in the Bundesliga preserves his value far better than another season on Leeds’ bench. Keeping him simply to block a move would be short-sighted. The player, the club, and the transfer market all point toward the same exit.
