Leeds United's Noah Okafor has explained a cautious approach to his Switzerland return after a recent hamstring lay-off, staying out of both friendlies to avoid risk.

The winger was recalled to replace Filip Ugrinić, ending a 17-month absence, but did not feature against Germany or Norway. The federation announced that he and Granit Xhaka were left out as a precaution while returning from injury, with the decision taken in consultation with players and staff.

Okafor has only just resumed club action, playing the final 22 minutes of Leeds’ 0-0 draw with Brentford after a month out. The approach appears designed to prevent overload so soon after his comeback.

He reflected that the week back with the national team was enjoyable and that he supported the group on and off the training pitch. A joint call was made not to take risks so soon after injury, and he hopes to rejoin the squad again soon.

Leeds will be relieved at the caution, with his one-v-one threat having been missed in recent weeks. The 25-year-old is hoped to play a crucial role in the Premier League relegation battle and could feature in the FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham on Sunday.
