Leeds United are closing in on Isaac Schmidt’s permanent exit.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, a switch to Young Boys is in the works after strong Swiss interest, with Basel also keen. The 26-year-old joined from FC St Gallen two years ago, signed as a full-back but failing to convince Daniel Farke. He mostly came on late in attacking roles.

He made 12 Championship substitute outings totalling 71 minutes as Leeds won the title, with his only two starts in the FA Cup. Last season he went on loan to Werder Bremen, making 19 league appearances, six of them starts. He featured on both sides of the defence and further forward on each flank.

Schmidt is due to depart permanently, following Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow after their end-of-contract moves to Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

One player not currently permitted to move is goalkeeper Lucas Perri. He reported for pre-season testing at Leeds Beckett this week and will train at Thorp Arch. As it stands he is Leeds’ only senior goalkeeper to have played top flight football last season, so a loan is not on the table, though arrivals could change that later in the window.

On incomings, Leeds continue to wait on Southampton’s Shea Charles and hold interest in Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemović. The Bosnian is viewed as the ideal replacement for Pascal Struijk after his move to Brighton this summer, and it could take a club-record fee to land the former Juventus man.
