Simonelli initially gained 13 votes in favour during the first round on December 9. The extra vote that he acquired on Friday was enough to see him appointed as the next Lega Serie A President.

Simonelli won the election with more votes than his two most recent predecessors: Casini, who got 11 votes, and Paolo Dal Pino, who was elected with 12 votes.

Simonelli’s background is originally in accounting. He graduated with a degree in economics and commerce from the University of Perugia. Most recently he has been the managing partner of the Simonelli Associates law firm, as well as serving as chair of the board of auditors for Mediaset Italia.

Perhaps most notably, Simonelli was formerly an accountant of the late Silvio Berlusconi.

Simonelli has also twice ran for the Presidency of the Lega Serie B, but was unsuccessful in both 2013 and 2021.
