The recent game between FC Barcelona and Leganes was one that promised to be difficult. After all, the Catalan giants were up against a team that relied a lot on their defensive resilience. Moreover, the last time these two sides had met this season, Barcelona dropped three points.
Having played at the Montjuic Stadium last time out, La Blaugrana were defeated at home by the visiting Leganes side. This time around, however, Hansi Flick’s team had the opportunity to take their revenge and ensure a bigger gap at the top of the La Liga table.
With a strong starting eleven set up for this game, it was clear that the German coach wanted all three points no matter what. However, once the game started, it became clear that this match would be much more complicated than most of the victories that the Catalan giants have managed in recent games.
Despite their perfect record in 2025 in terms of being unbeaten, Barcelona were tested to their absolute limit against this Leganes side. Clearly exhausted due to the number of games that they have been playing recently, the team was struggling to find the back of the net.
Despite doing well when in possession, the players were clearly not at their best when it came to the final pass or their finishing for that matter. Throughout the first half, Barcelona had around 74% possession but failed to generate a higher xG than a low 0.29. In comparison, Leganes generated almost the same xG with 0.22 themselves. It was clear that the home side was frustrating Hansi Flick’s team.
On the other hand, the second half saw both teams get decent chances to score as well. Barcelona managed to generate a xG of 1.06 while having 60% possession, but Leganes were not too far behind with their own xG of 0.50 with 40% of the possession. Ultimately, it was a game that was decided by moments and one such moment was the own goal scored by Leganes defender Jorge Saenz.
That goal was a result of good work from both Gerard Martin, who won back the ball cleverly, and Raphinha, who played the ball that deflected off the Leganes defender and into the back of the net. Apart from that, no goals came to be in this tight 1-0 victory for Barcelona.
However, special credit has to go to both Raphinha and Inigo Martinez. Both of those players made crucial game-changing tackles that prevented clear opportunities for Leganes to score against Barça. Moreover, Frenkie de Jong was also pivotal as his introduction in the second half clearly benefited Barcelona a lot.
