Leganes manager Borja Jimenez sounded extremely frustrated after the defeat against Real Madrid but showed faith in the refereeing system.

While he described the contentious calls as a matter of “bad luck,” he also urged his club to take action, suggesting that speaking out like other clubs could be beneficial for them.

Jimenez emphasised that he still trusts the refereeing system, even if he feels his team has been unfortunate in recent matches.

“I’m not going to complain again today. Let’s see if we get lucky with the draws. I said it on Friday, and I say it actively and passively: those of us at the bottom or at the top have little right to complain.

“I have a lot of trust in the refereeing system, but we’ve had bad luck. I hope the club does something about it,” he began saying.

The penalty incident

The Leganes manager specifically referred to two key incidents during the match— the penalty given against his side for Oscar Rodriguez’s challenge on Arda Guler, and the foul by Renato Tapia on Rodrygo that led to Real Madrid’s decisive comeback goal.

“I don’t think it’s a lack of skill, far from it. I was lucky enough to speak with him—referee Gonzalez Fuertes— before the match started.”

Jimenez acknowledged that the referee, Gonzalez Fuertes, did not have his best performance but insisted that he respected the official’s effort.

“He didn’t have his best day, as could happen to us. He’ll be self-critical, but I have the utmost respect for him. We’ve had bad luck, again,” he said.

Jimenez admitted that his players were left frustrated and angry by the controversial moments.

“They’re very angry because we saw the actions, and they’re indignant, angry; I’ve tried to get them to appreciate what they did to make the team play well here.”

The decisions that went against them left the squad feeling indignant, and he tried to encourage them to focus on their overall performance rather than dwell on the officiating errors.

Despite their frustration, he praised his team’s effort against a dominant Real Madrid side.

“We had the 2-3 as soon as we conceded. Madrid dominated; they had us close to the penalty area, but we knew we had to be like that. They were very upset by the circumstances,” he added.
