Arrigo Sacchi feels AC Milan sent a “message” with their semifinal win over Juventus, but Inter Milan are still big favourites in the Supercoppa Italiana final.
Sacchi gave his predictions for Monday’s final in an interview in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter take on city rivals AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana final on Monday.
The two teams are in very different situations heading into the clash.
In the case of the Nerazzurri, they are a very familiar team. They have been building under coach Simone Inzaghi for the past three and a half years.
Therefore, there will be little doubt or question about how Inter will look to set up.
The Nerazzurri will feel confident that they know how to navigate a Supercoppa final, having won the last three.
On the other hand, Milan are in a major period of transition. Last week, they sacked Paulo Fonseca as coach and appointed Sergio Conceicao to replace him.
That means that the Rossoneri are just starting to find their identity under the former Porto coach.
But on the other hand, that could give them the element of surprise. As it did when they beat Juventus in the semifinal yesterday.
As far as a favourites for Monday’s match, Sacchi said “Easy answer: Inter.”
“The Nerazzurri are not strong,” the former Milan coach said. “They’re very strong.”
Sacchi called Inter “a mature team, the team of Simone Inzaghi, and they’re growing match after match.”
“That means that there’s a lot of work that’s went into the base of the team. There’s a project that they’re following.”
Sacchi said Milan’s win over Juventus, coming back from a goal down, was a “positive message after the change on the bench.”
“Clearly, from a tactical point of view, Sergio Conceicao hasn’t had time to make an impact.”
“But there was a reaction in the second half,” Sacchi continued. “The group evidently has the eneregy to turn around negative situations.”
“And the football knowledge to face even difficult opposition like Juve.”
