FC Bayern celebrated a commanding victory over VfB Stuttgart to kick off the new Bundesliga season. Several FCB players have already shown themselves to be performing at a very solid level this early in the season.
One of the players who stood out was Alphonso Davies. The Canadian, who plays for the record champions, put in a strong performance following his long injury layoff and the issues he faced leading up to the World Cup.
Davies played left back and did his job well, frequently making runs forward and setting up the 3-1 goal—an own goal by Josha Vagnoman—with his cross.
Marcel Reif, the legendary reporter, recently spoke about Davies on “Reif ist live,” a BILD program. He, too, definitely noticed the improvement in Davies’ form. However, Reif couldn’t resist a little dig.

“Alphonso Davies is playing like Alphonso Davies again—not like his less-talented brother. Of course, the deep roster helps him too, obviously,” Reif said of the Canadian. Especially in the final phase of his Bayern career, Davies showed fluctuations in his performance from time to time.
Those fluctuations are now said to be a thing of the past. It’s also important that competition within Bayern remains fierce. “It’s also clear that when you get the chance to play, you want to show right away just how good you are. So there are many factors at play that are part of this club’s DNA,” Reif explained. And on the subject of Davies, he concluded: “When he’s in top form, Bayern gets even better.”
And who knows—maybe Davies will also benefit from Brown’s arrival. Not only because of the competition, but also because, as a lightning-fast player, Davies always had to play whenever Bayern faced teams strong on the counterattack. Here, the two sprinters in Bayern’s defense can divide up the responsibilities very well.
